SINGLE REVIEW: Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking? by Bernie Journey

Bernie Journey is a singer/songwriter hailing from New York and this track ‘Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking?’ is released on December 30th, 2014. It is being released on the indie dance label Phunk Junk Records and will feature remixes by Ros Garcia and El Brujo. The song is an interesting blend of pop, rock, indie and electronica with first class production that gives it a polished commercial sheen.

It begins with an intro you’d more often find on a dance track with electronic drums and synths. What first grabs the listener is Bernie’s voice which is perfect for the track, commercial sounding but still with plenty of personality. Lyrically, the song is fairly standard fare, about hopefully getting a amorous with a lady. The chorus hook is extremely catchy and instantly memorable, the rather risqué lyrics running “Are you thinking what I’m thinking? If you’re thinking what I’m thinking let’s get to unzipping….”.

The rock and indie elements emerge throughout the track with some funky wah-wah guitar and low end distorted chords at points that add musical flavour. There is also some nice, understated lead guitar towards the end but generally the guitars as mixed low in relation to the vocals, making it more pop than rock. In the current musical climate, that might be a smart move as rock and guitars are not featuring much in the charts right now.

Overall, this is an excellent upbeat pop/rock/dance hybrid that is suitable both for the clubs and radio, with the catchy chorus making it particularly suitable for the latter. Having already amassed a considerable fanbase, I think its only a matter of time before Bernie Journey breaks through to the upper echelons of the pop charts with songs as good as this.
